About the walk

1,050 years of faith, dance, and song.

This isn't a history walk. It's the city's pulse — and I've been part of it since I was twelve, dancing with KUD Marko Marojica from Župa dubrovačka and learning the steps that go back centuries before any of us.

The Festa of Saint Blaise has been celebrated for over 1,050 years — since 972. That's older than the Republic of Ragusa itself, older than most European nations. For 19 years I've worn folk costume and carried the banner of the Parish of Mary Magdalene in the grand procession on Stradun. This walk takes you to the exact spots where the festa happens, and tells you what it means to a city that has held together because of it.

I'll share the story of Linđo — the lively poskočica named after Nikola Lale "Linđo", a legendary lijerica player from my own Župa. His music still echoes at every festa. I'll introduce you to klapa singing — the a cappella voice of Dalmatia, with a Spotify playlist of my favourites so you can keep it with you long after you leave.

This walk connects three UNESCO heritage elements: the Old City (1979), the Festivity of Saint Blaise (2009), and Klapa singing of Dalmatia (2012). Three different kinds of protection for one continuous tradition. By the end you'll understand why a small city has held together for a thousand years — not through stone, but through what we do on the second Sunday of February.
"In Dubrovnik, you don't just visit St. Blaise. You become part of him for the day."
Itinerary

Six stops, one living tradition.

01
St. Blaise church on Stradun
We start where the saint himself lives — the small Baroque church holding his relics. I'll tell you the story of how Sv. Vlaho saved Dubrovnik in 971 and why his hand and skull are paraded through the city every February.
02
The Parish of Mary Magdalene
A quiet alleyway most tourists never see. This is my parish — the one whose banner I carry. I'll show you where we gather before the procession and tell you what it feels like to walk Stradun in folk costume with thousands watching.
03
Stradun — the procession route
We walk the exact path the festa takes — from Pile to the Cathedral. I'll point out where the bands stop, where the children dance Linđo, and where the city pauses for the blessing.
04
The Cathedral
Where the festa culminates in the Mass and the relics are blessed. The same cathedral that has hosted this ceremony for over a thousand winters.
05
Hidden corners of klapa
A narrow loggia where klapa groups still gather to sing on quiet evenings. I'll demonstrate, badly, and share my Spotify playlist of the real singers so you can hear what Dalmatian harmony actually sounds like.
06
View over the Old Town
We finish at a vantage point overlooking the city. From here I'll trace the procession route one last time, and you'll see why a thousand-year tradition still holds a city together.
