About the walk

The city-state that chose freedom.

Picture a small republic squeezed between Venice and the Ottoman Empire, surviving — even thriving — for 450 years not through armies but through clever diplomacy, deep merchant networks, and one stubborn idea: Libertas.

On this 1.5-hour walk we trace how Dubrovnik built nearly 2 km of stone walls up to 25 metres high, refused to bow to Venetian doges, paid careful tribute to Ottoman sultans, and pioneered things like public health quarantine, orphanages, and a senate of merchants. The Republic of Ragusa wasn't just a port — it was an experiment in self-government that outlived most European monarchies of its time.

I'll show you where the senate met, where ships were inspected for plague before docking, and where the rector lived under a strict rule that he could not leave the Rector's Palace during his one-month term. Real stories, told slowly, on the streets they happened on.
"Let's explore my home together — the way only a true local can."
We finish at a viewpoint on the walls where the whole city opens up beneath you — terracotta roofs, the green island of Lokrum, and the same Adriatic that brought Ragusan ships home for four centuries.
Itinerary

Six stops, one story.

01
Pile Gate & Onofrio's Fountain
Meet at the western gate where merchants and travellers were once filtered, watered, and checked for disease before stepping into the city. We'll start where every visit to Ragusa has started for 600 years.
02
Stradun, the marble main street
The 300-metre limestone spine of the city, polished by centuries of footsteps. I'll show you the marks the 1667 earthquake left, why every building is the same height, and where the boys still play football at dusk.
03
The Rector's Palace
Home and prison to Ragusa's elected ruler for the duration of his one-month term. Step into the courtyard and hear how a maritime republic ran itself without kings, with rotating leaders and a senate of merchants.
04
Cathedral & the relics of Sv. Vlaho
Dubrovnik's patron saint, his story, and why his finger and skull are paraded through the streets every February. A taste of the Saint Blaise tour — if it sparks something, we have a whole walk dedicated to it.
05
Old Port & the arsenals
Where Ragusan galleons were built, repaired, and launched toward the Levant. The shipyards are gone but the stone arches remain. We'll stand where merchants counted their cargoes coming home.
06
The walls — final viewpoint
We climb a short stretch of the walls to a quiet bastion. The whole city lies below; the islands open across the water. I'll point out the route the Sv. Vlaho procession takes, and where Game of Thrones filmed its most famous scenes — both for another day.
